An old Rabbi was sitting around a table with his students one day when a student said, “Ribbi, speak to us of repentance.”
The Rabbi replied, “You have heard it said, ‘Repentance is being sorry for something you have done and vowing not to do it again.’ But I say to you, true repentance is different.
We live our lives facing the past…what we did…what we said…offenses we have given…mistakes we made. We are sorry for these things. But then we do the same things again. We live our lives facing the past.
Repentance is turning around and facing a new direction, facing the future that God has planned for us.
Repentance is taking a new direction in life, a direction that is pleasing to God who will forgive our sins of the past. Only then have we truly repented.
Amen.
